We managed Google Business Profiles and local SEO for multiple AC service businesses in New Jersey. The goal was simple: more local visibility and more website traffic for the searches that bring in AC repair jobs. Despite an outdated website, a history of different business names and limited resources for content, the business reached #1 across the entire local rank grid for “ac repair Hawthorne NJ” and #2 across the grid for “ac repair Teaneck NJ”.

The challenge: four things holding back local rankings
For an HVAC company, the Google map pack is where much of the work comes from. When an AC unit breaks down, people search “ac repair” plus their town, look at the three businesses on the map, and call one of them. If you are not in those three spots, you are largely invisible for the most valuable searches in your trade.
This client faced four obstacles:
- Outdated website infrastructure. The site offered limited customization, which made on-page SEO changes difficult.
- Inconsistent business information. The business had operated under multiple names in the past, which made name, address and phone number (NAP) citations messy and confusing for Google.
- Limited content and link-building opportunities. There was little company news or events to build content and earn links around.
- Resource constraints. Keeping up a steady stream of HVAC blog content was hard to sustain.

Each of these matters commercially. Inconsistent NAP data in particular undermines Google’s confidence that a business is who and where it says it is, and that confidence is central to map pack rankings.
What the audit found
A full analysis showed four areas that needed work:
- Suboptimal website structure. The site did not follow local SEO best practice, such as clear service pages and area pages.
- Insufficient online reputation. Too few customer reviews and limited local citations held rankings back.
- Weak authority and backlink profile. Low domain authority and few backlinks limited visibility.
- Performance issues. Slow page speed hurt both user experience and rankings.

The audit made one thing clear: with a hard-to-change website, the fastest gains would come from the parts of local SEO that live outside the site, especially the Google Business Profile and citations, while on-page work was done wherever the platform allowed.
What we did
Google Business Profile management
The Google Business Profile is the single most important asset for map rankings. For each AC brand we kept the profile complete and active. That meant choosing the most accurate primary category and relevant secondary categories, listing every service with clear descriptions, adding real photos of the team, vans and work, and publishing regular posts. An active, complete profile signals to Google that the business is real, current and relevant to the searches it wants to appear for.
Consistent NAP citations
We replaced the mix of past business names with one name, address and phone number across directories. That involved finding old listings, correcting or claiming them, and making sure the main data aggregators and home-service directories showed identical details. Clean citations remove the doubt that conflicting information creates, which helps map rankings directly.
Local on-page SEO
Within the limits of the platform, we built service and area pages around high-intent searches such as “ac repair” plus town names. Each page covered one service and one area clearly, with the town named in titles and headings, local details, and a clear phone number and call to action. This gave Google relevant pages to connect with the business’s profile and gave visitors a page that matched what they searched.
Reviews and reputation
We put a steady process in place for earning and answering customer reviews. Asking every satisfied customer, making it easy with a direct link, and replying to every review, positive or negative, builds both rankings and trust. Reviews are often what decides which of the three map listings a homeowner calls.
The results: #1 across the grid
Local rank-grid tracking (13×13 grid, 1 km spacing) measures rankings from many points across an area, not just one location. It showed the business ranking #1 across the whole grid for “ac repair Hawthorne NJ”, with an average map rank of 1.0 and a 100% share of local voice, and #2 across the grid for “ac repair Teaneck NJ”.

What this means in practice: wherever someone in the tracked area searches for AC repair in Hawthorne, this business appears first on the map. For a service where customers usually call one of the first listings they see, that is about as strong a local position as a business can hold.
Lessons for HVAC and home service businesses
1. Your Google Business Profile is your shop window
Complete categories, services, photos and regular posts do more for map rankings than most website changes.
2. Fix your business history
Past names and old phone numbers scattered across the web confuse Google. Cleaning them up is unglamorous but powerful.
3. An old website is not a dead end
Off-site local SEO can deliver strong results even when the site itself is hard to change.
4. Reviews win the click
Ranking gets you seen; reviews get you called. Make asking for them part of every job.
5. Measure with a grid, not a single search
Rank-grid tracking shows how visible you are across your whole service area.
How to apply this to your HVAC business
- Audit your Google Business Profile: categories, services, photos, hours and posts.
- Search for old business names and phone numbers and correct every listing you find.
- Create one page for each core service and each key town you serve.
- Ask every happy customer for a review and reply to all of them.
- Track your map rankings across a grid of your service area.
FAQ
How long does local SEO take for an HVAC company?
Improvements to a Google Business Profile and citations can start to show within a few weeks to a few months. Strong, stable map rankings across a whole service area usually take three to six months of consistent work.
Can I rank in Google Maps without a good website?
A strong website helps, but the Google Business Profile, citations and reviews carry a lot of weight in map rankings. This case shows top positions are possible even when the website has limitations.
Does changing my business name hurt local SEO?
It can, if old names stay on directories and listings. Updating every citation to the current name, address and phone number limits the damage and helps Google trust the new details.
