A criminal defense law practice doubled its monthly revenue compared with a year earlier after we took over its SEO and Google Ads. Organic visitors grew from 390 to 2,011 a month, calls from organic search rose 192%, and the Google Ads click-to-call conversion rate went from 3.2% to 24.8%, producing over 150 calls a month from Google Ads alone.

The challenge: urgent clients, invisible firm
Criminal defense is one of the most time-sensitive legal services there is. When someone is arrested or charged, they or their family search immediately and usually call the first credible firm they find. A practice that is not visible at that moment does not get a second chance.
When we started at the end of August 2019, the firm had 751 monthly visitors, of which 390 came from organic search. Its Google Ads account was converting just 3.2% of clicks into calls. In one of the most expensive advertising categories on Google, that conversion rate meant most of the budget produced no enquiries.
Why it matters commercially: a single criminal defense case can be worth a substantial fee. Every missed call is lost revenue, and every wasted click in legal search is expensive. Improving both visibility and conversion has a direct, measurable effect on the firm’s income.
What we did: SEO for steady growth, Google Ads for immediate calls
Phase one: a modest SEO budget, built on foundations
We began with a modest SEO budget focused on the fundamentals: technical health, on-page optimization of the practice area pages, and local relevance. For a criminal defense firm, that means separate, well-structured pages for each charge type and practice area (for example DUI, drug offenses, assault, theft), each answering the questions a worried person asks: what happens next, possible penalties, and how a lawyer helps. Clear contact details and click-to-call buttons on every page make it easy to act.
After 8 months, traffic had increased to 973 total visitors, with 616 from organic search. Shortly after, overall traffic passed 1,100 visitors, with 869 from organic search.
Phase two: an upgraded content and link building campaign
With the foundations proving themselves, the firm increased its investment. Over four months we ran a more robust strategy with larger budgets for content, on-page optimization, link building and social media:
- Content: in-depth pages and articles covering specific charges, legal processes and common questions, written in plain English for people under stress.
- On-page optimization: stronger titles, headings, internal links between related charges and practice areas, and schema markup to describe the firm as a legal service.
- Link building: relevant, authoritative links from legal directories, local organizations and publications, the kind of signals that show Google the firm is a trusted local authority.
- Social media: consistent activity that supported the firm’s reputation and gave content more reach.
In the final month, overall traffic reached 2,937 visitors, with 2,011 from organic search.

Rebuilding Google Ads around calls
Search ads in criminal defense are about one action: a phone call. We restructured the account around high-intent searches for specific charges and urgent help, used call-focused ad formats and call assets, and added negative keywords to filter out searches with no hiring intent, such as people looking for free information, jobs or unrelated legal topics. Ad copy emphasized what matters to someone in crisis: availability, experience and a direct line to a lawyer. Call tracking meant every call could be attributed to the campaign and keyword that produced it, so budget moved toward what worked.
The results
- 58% increase in organic traffic after the first 6 months
- 123% increase in organic traffic after the first 12 months
- An additional 131% increase after 4 months of the upgraded link building and content campaign
- 192% increase in calls from organic traffic, pre-SEO compared with the end of the period
- Google Ads conversion rate from 3.2% to 24.8% (click to call)
- Over 150 calls a month (110–130 unique) from Google Ads alone, with the client increasing monthly ad spend twice during this time

What this means for the business: the firm doubled its monthly revenue year on year. Organic search became a growing, compounding source of calls that does not charge per click. The Google Ads improvement was just as important: moving from 3.2% to 24.8% means the same click now produces several times the chance of a call. That is why the client was comfortable increasing ad spend twice. When each dollar returns more cases, investing more is an easy decision.
What made the difference: lessons for law firms
- Prove the foundations, then scale. A modest start showed results; the upgraded budget then accelerated them.
- One page per charge or practice area. Specific pages rank for specific searches and reassure specific clients.
- Conversion rate is the biggest Google Ads lever. Fixing it multiplies the value of every click you already pay for.
- Track calls, not just clicks. In legal services, the phone call is the conversion that matters.
- SEO and Google Ads work best together. Ads deliver calls now; SEO builds a lower-cost source of calls over time.
How to apply this to your firm
- Check your Google Ads conversion rate and confirm calls are tracked accurately.
- Review search terms and add negatives for non-hiring searches.
- Create or improve a dedicated page for each charge type or practice area.
- Make click-to-call obvious on every mobile page.
- Build relevant local and legal links steadily rather than in bursts.
- Review calls and cases by source every month and fund what produces clients.
FAQ
How long does SEO take for a criminal defense firm?
SEO results usually start to show in 3–6 months, with stronger gains over 6–12 months. In this case, organic traffic was up 58% after six months and 123% after twelve, and a larger investment accelerated growth further.
Is Google Ads worth it for criminal defense?
It can be, but only with tight management. Cost per click in legal is among the highest in Google Ads, so call tracking, negative keywords and strong conversion rates make the difference between profit and waste.
Should we do SEO or Google Ads first?
Many firms benefit from both: Google Ads to generate calls quickly while SEO builds a long-term, lower-cost source of enquiries. The right balance depends on your budget, competition and how quickly you need cases.
