This case study follows a brand-new website, built on a 7-year-old domain that had never been used for anything worthwhile, from its first month in Google to real scale. Starting in September 2022 with 46 clicks and an average position of 42.7, the site reached 13.6K clicks, 446K impressions and an average position of 17.7 by February 2023. It is a month-by-month record of what we did, what we got wrong and what moved the numbers.
At a glance
- Project: New content website on an aged, previously unused domain
- Service: SEO: keyword research, content, backlinks, title and click-through optimization
- Timeframe: September 2022 to February 2023
- Key results: clicks from 46 to 13.6K a month; impressions from 5.14K to 446K; average CTR from 0.9% to 3%; average position from 42.7 to 17.7
The challenge: starting from almost nothing
A new website has no history, no links and no track record with Google. The domain here was 7 years old, but it had never hosted anything of value, so age alone gave it little advantage. Search engines had no reason yet to trust it.
That is the situation many businesses face when launching a new brand, a new service line or a fresh site after years of neglect. The commercial question is simple: how quickly can a site go from invisible to producing meaningful traffic, and what actually drives that growth? This project answers it with real Search Console data.

What we did, month by month
September 2022: set up, publish, get crawled
Starting point:
- Clicks: 46
- Impressions: 5.14K
- Average CTR: 0.9%
- Average position: 42.7
We set up the new site, wrote a small set of articles based on keyword research and actively prompted Google to crawl them, for example by submitting the sitemap and requesting indexing in Search Console. Once pages started appearing, we reviewed the early data to spot mistakes and improvement opportunities.
An average position of 42.7 means most pages sat on page four or five of results. That is normal for a new site. The key at this stage is getting indexed quickly and learning which topics Google is willing to test you for.
October 2022: first quality backlinks and better images
- Clicks: 516 (+1021%)
- Impressions: 28.5K (+454%)
- Average CTR: 1.8% (+100%)
- Average position: 25.5 (+67%)
We added a few high-quality backlinks and used attractive images designed to make people want to click. The links gave the site its first real authority signals, and the average position improved sharply. Better visuals helped the site stand out wherever images show in results and when content is shared.
The lesson: a few relevant, credible links do far more for a new site than many weak ones.
November 2022: more content, more links, sharper titles
- Clicks: 2.4K (+365%)
- Impressions: 45.8K (+60%)
- Average CTR: 5.2% (+420%)
- Average position: 29.3 (-13%)
The strategy stayed largely the same: more articles and more backlinks. The one significant change was how we wrote titles.
Look at what happened. Average position actually got slightly worse, yet clicks rose by 365%, driven by a CTR that jumped to 5.2%. Better titles made searchers far more likely to choose this result over the others on the page. This is the clearest proof in the whole project that ranking is only half the job. Title tags are your advert in the search results. A title that matches the searcher’s intent, promises a clear benefit and reads naturally can multiply traffic without any change in rank.
December 2022: monitor, publish, improve what exists
- Clicks: 4.18K (+74%)
- Impressions: 123K (+173%)
- Average CTR: 3.4% (-52%)
- Average position: 21.1 (+38%)
The focus moved to monitoring rankings, writing new content and improving existing articles. Impressions nearly tripled as the site began appearing for many more searches, and average position improved.
CTR fell, and that is worth understanding rather than fearing. When a site suddenly appears for many new, broader searches, often in lower positions, the average CTR drops even as total clicks rise. Clicks grew 74%, which is the number that matters.
Improving existing articles is one of the most underused tactics in SEO. Pages that already rank on page two often need only better coverage, clearer structure or updated information to climb.
January 2023: steady growth, lower-quality links
- Clicks: 7.02K (+68%)
- Impressions: 265K (+115%)
- Average CTR: 2.6% (-31%)
- Average position: 19.7 (+7.1%)
The site kept acquiring backlinks naturally, but this month they were of very low quality. Growth continued, driven by the content base built in earlier months, while the position gains slowed. Natural links are a good sign that content is being noticed, but low-quality ones add little authority. This is why active, quality-focused link building still matters even once a site starts attracting links on its own.
February 2023: the breakthrough
- Clicks: 13.6K (+94%)
- Impressions: 446K (+66%)
- Average CTR: 3% (+15%)
- Average position: 17.7 (+11%)
This was the month the growth became truly visible. Clicks almost doubled again, impressions reached 446K, and CTR recovered as more pages settled into stronger positions.
The results
From the first month to the last:
- Clicks: 46 to 13.6K
- Impressions: 5.14K to 446K
- Average CTR: 0.9% to 3%
- Average position: 42.7 to 17.7
The curve is the real story. Early months show large percentage jumps from a small base; later months show large absolute gains as authority and content compound. Each month built on the work of the previous ones.

What made the difference: lessons for any new website
- Get indexed fast, then learn from the data. Early Search Console data tells you what Google is willing to rank you for.
- A few quality links beat many poor ones. The first high-quality links moved positions more than later low-quality ones did.
- Titles drive clicks as much as rankings do. Rewriting titles lifted CTR to 5.2% in a single month, even as average position slipped.
- Improve what you already have. Updating existing articles is often faster than writing new ones.
- Read metrics together. A falling CTR alongside rising clicks and impressions usually means healthy expansion, not a problem.
How to apply this to your business
- Submit your sitemap and check indexing in Google Search Console.
- Build content from keyword research, not guesswork.
- Earn a small number of relevant, credible backlinks early.
- Test new title tags on pages with many impressions but few clicks.
- Each month, update the articles sitting on page two.
- Track clicks, impressions, CTR and position together.
FAQ
How quickly can a new website get traffic from Google?
It varies with competition and effort, but a new site often takes several months to build momentum. Consistent content, quality links and ongoing improvement are what turn early visibility into meaningful traffic.
Does an old domain help SEO?
Domain age alone gives little advantage if the domain was never used for anything useful. What counts is the content, links and trust the site builds once it is live.
Why did CTR fall while clicks went up?
When a site starts appearing for many more searches, often in lower positions, the average CTR drops even though total clicks rise. Judge progress by clicks and conversions, not CTR alone.
